Maison Suzu
Our journey in exploring Japanese fashion begins with Maison Suzu. This is a couture wedding gowns brand originated in Tokyo with another branch in London. Founded in 2012 by designer Shiho Nohara, the brand’s DNA is very clean and minimalistic in the overall look, but at the same time has whimsical and unexpected beautiful details that are outside the box for the wedding gowns norm.
Saikai
Saikai is a luxe kimono brand based in Tokyo. The kimono designs are based on traditional techniques and craftsmanship that are vanishing from todays world. The intention is to bring the Japanese tradition from past generations into nowadays, and maintain the values that they stand for, while making them more up to date and relevant to every woman in the world who appreciates Japanese culture.
Preparage
Preparage is a bridal gown brand also based in Tokyo. The romantic vintage inspired dresses exude lightness with flowing thin fabrics or sheer lace used in layers. The Preparage bride is fairy-like and classic. The designs are very balanced and let the presence of the bride shine, without over baring her.
Y’s – Yohji Yamamoto
Last but certainly not least (!) is the one and only Yohji Yamamoto. We visited a special event that took place at the shop of the first out of his many brands, Y’s. The event celebrated not only the new men’s collection but also a long lasting collaboration with photographer Max Vadukul. His photographs were showcased in projections and prints all around the space. Needless to say the dress code was black and white, hence the black and white pictures to enhance it. There was a fascinating mix of creatives among the guests that oozed sophistication and chic, and were just as inspiring as the actual art & clothes in the shop.
